Watch 36 second March 14, 2013 video while County Commission Chair Eilert and County Commissioner Peterson are joined with County Commissioner Allen laughing about transparency in government. They are laughing at the Kansas Legislature considering changes to existing State law via Senate Bill 10. http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2013_14/measures/documents/sb10_00_0000.pdf
Immediately after taking control of The Commission in January 2011 Mr. Eilert mandated in a nearly secret, unrecorded or transcripted meeting held off site of County property that County staff would no longer produce written transcripts of County meetings as historically done. The justification was $25,000 per year in out-sourcing this written document. We learned of this only because of our investigation regarding nearly secret meetings http://nolathe.net/2011/02/26/our-clear-and-present-danger/ .
.
Written transcripts of all County business ended in February 2011. At the beginning of the March 3, 2011 Board of County Commissioners’ Meeting we made this presentation.
.
At the beginning of the following March 10, 2011 Commissioners’ Meeting the County accepts “Transparency Award”.
.
NOlathe presentation followed.
.
The County continued to receive the “Sunshine Award” for “Transparency” in 2012 and 2013 explaining the laughter.

Accepting a Sunshine Award at a time when access to public information is being narrowed seems to prove an elite attitude by the Commissioners. Public SERVICE is not in everyone’s vocabulary, nor is TRANSPARENCY when it is inconvenient. I guess it really comes down to what the meaning of “is” is, doesn’t it? Once again, Ken provides the people with eye-opening information. Thank you.
